The Outsider’s Take on DC Universe Online

In December, DC Universe Online brought its beta to PlayStation+ and PC, in advance of its retail release on January 12th. I spent a few hours giving it a shake to see if it could crack my fortress of solitude.

Why I’m A Bit Worried About RAGE

When I was at Eurogamer Expo, I attended a demo session hosted by Tim Willits of id Software, designer on such games as the Quake series, and Doom 3. He was giving a talk and demo of id’s new game RAGE, due out next year. And from what I saw, it leaves me a tad worried.

Hands-On: Frozen Synapse

James is at Eurogamer Expo 2010 in London, and while he’s trying to enjoy himself at his first games showcase, he’s also trying to work and get some hands-on time. This is one of several previews of games featured at this year’s event. One of the games that really surprised me at the Eurogamer Expo this weekend was at the Indie Section: a turn based strategy called Frozen Synapse by Mode 7 Games. It’s a squad-style turn-based shooter that’s a bit hard to explain in only a sentence or two […]

Hands-On: Brink Multiplayer

James is at Eurogamer Expo 2010 in London, and while he’s trying to enjoy himself at his first games showcase, he’s also trying to work and get some hands-on time. This is one of several previews of games featured at this year’s event. Often enough we’ve seen the term “squad-based shooter” bandied around by production companies and developers alike, but the games just end up being Rambo-style free for all shooters with the only clear objective being to kill whoever’s not on your team. Certain modes in games like Counter-Strike, […]

Hands-On: Gran Turismo 5

James is at Eurogamer Expo 2010 in London, and while he’s trying to enjoy himself at his first games showcase, he’s also trying to work and get some hands-on time. This is one of several previews of games featured at this year’s event. So, what’s there to be said about Gran Turismo 5 that hasn’t been said already? It has loads of cars, loads of tracks, fantastic visuals, 3D, karting, rallying, NASCAR, AI Team management… I could go on. So instead of rattling off a lorry load of features, I’ll […]

Hands-On: Need For Speed – Hot Pursuit

James is at Eurogamer Expo 2010 in London, and while he’s trying to enjoy himself at his first games showcase, he’s also trying to work and get some hands-on time. This is the first of several previews of games featured at this year’s event. Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit definitely checks all expected boxes – and then some. Being developed by Criterion, naturally everyone expected it to play a little bit like Burnout. And it does. A lot.

A Look At Gran Turismo Anywhere

Anyone that knows me, knows that while I’ve tried to get into the whole Facebook social gaming thing, I’d just play it for a few days, get a bit of the hook, then snap out of it and go cold for a few days. I still think it’s a great platform that can get a game a lot of exposure to a good game, given that you can get a good push behind it early when starting out, but until its games start maybe using browser-based game engines like Unity […]

Gamescom hands-on – Kinect

Right down the south entrance of the Cologne Exhibition Centre, Hall 8 featured many of the big names of the gaming industry. Wasting no time before the masses arrived, I visited the first area that crossed my line of sight, the Microsoft Kinect booth. I should say booths, actually – the company’s area included several wide-open stands, but also included some dozen half-closed booths. My interest was on Kinect Sports, but not wanting to waste any time, I went with the next free booth, which just so happened to be […]

Minecraft Alpha Impressions

Minecraft is a curious PC game developed by the lone developer ‘Notch’. At it’s core it’s a game of building, mining and crafting. It escapes definition for any particular genre other than ‘open world’ and is very much a game of what you make of it, literally. And as I recently took the plunge in buying myself into the current alpha I thought I’d take the plunge with a little write up on it.
