What I’d Like To See At E3

E3’s coming right up around the corner, and with it, the biggest games of this holiday season and beyond, as publishers and developers encroach upon Los Angeles to show the world’s media what they’ll have to offer over the next year. I will not be in attendance, but I will be watching the conferences and the news feeds, and looking forward to seeing if my predictions and hopes come true.

Well, considering what I wrote on my personal blog before joining the fold here, I’ll make no surprise of the fact that I’d love it if we actually see something pertaining to Half Life 2 Episode 3 at E3 this year. Episode 2 came out in October 2007, and we’ve been waiting for the end of the trilogy for a while now. Valve have continuously teased us with its delays and it’s not-being-mentioned for the past 2 years, and will probably want to bring something to the table to prevent it from being Duke Nukem Forevered. Gabe Newell has already said that recently announced Portal 2 will not be making an appearance at E3, but did mention that its expected preview would be replaced by a surprise, so who knows, maybe this is it?

Speaking of Duke Nukem Forever, what would an E3 be without Gran Turismo 5 constantly being on display on the show floor but constantly not being on our store shelves? Polyphony Digital have, at least to my liking anyway, spent far too long polishing what they claim to be “a finished title”, that Sony have started urging them to shoehorn in all their new tech, like support for 3D televisions, and the PlayStation Move, along with head tracking via the EyeToy, but one has to wonder why they’ve taken their sweet time over this. After it was revealed in 2004, Kazunori Yamauchi stated that Gran Turismo was going to be the PSP’s killer app. just over 5 years later, we finally got it, and while it’s still good, many like me are not getting it, instead preferring to hold out for the inevitable PS3 release. But what if we’re going to be made wait 5 years as well? Can we last until 2012 without a new Gran Turismo title? Will Turn 12 have released Forza Motorsport 4 within that time frame and cause even more GT waiters to make the jump to their series?

Another on my to-watch-for would have to be Capcom’s array of games on-show. I don’t have an Xbox, so missed the first Dead Rising game. After playing it at a friend’s, it’s pretty much cemented the upcoming sequel on my must-play list, now that it’s coming out on PlayStation as well. Monster Hunter Frontier’s 360 version in Asia would be expected to make a brief appearance, along with PSP cousin Portable 3rd, and Marvel Vs Capcom 3 looks like it will more than eclipses its predecessor on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. And given my love of the original (remake), Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 is another one I’ll be keeping tabs on, after the reveal trailer at Captivate in April blew me away.

Lastly, I’m looking forward to seeing at least one new IP. A new original game being announced and showcased, a genuine surprise that haven’t been hinted at, or even breathed about in the media, across different publications and websites. Something so totally new and unseen that it will blow your mind.
