My favorite games on the iOS App Store continue the trend that Nintendo’s Wii started in 2006; they utilize simplistic, natural controls to create engaging experiences that almost everyone can play, but few can master. Only a handful of developers have handled this as well as Semi Secret, who defined an entire genre with the “endless runner” known as Canabalt. These mad geniuses of design have returned with Hundreds, which might be their easiest/hardest game to date.

It’s probably apt that I reached my GOTY decision in a partly mechanical manner. In lieu of my final choice doing anything particularly outstanding, my 130+ hours in its multiplayer mode stands as a testament to its lasting entertainment value and elevated it above other close contenders. Yep, I never expected to be basing my decision on the combat – the mechanics – in a Mass Effect game, but here we are.
FTL – Faster Than Light is my game of the year. It is no huge grand release, but unlike others chosen for specific qualities that would make them the best game of the year, FTL is a game of the Year.

I wanted to be writing about Persona 4 Golden, but my conscience wouldn’t allow it. Giving 2012 Game of the Year to a 2008 game that was simply rereleased is obviously cheating, and I couldn’t do it. And while it’s certainly the game I’ve enjoyed most this year, it’s for the best that I can’t give it GotY.
Dishonored is a first-person stealth action game developed by Arkane Studios for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. If you don’t know that already, you’ve been living under a gaming rock. It’s also my Game of the Year, and I think anyone who disagrees is an awful yazzihamper of an un-person.
