Today is Father’s Day in many nations around the world. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, fathers make us who we are, and in gaming it’s no different. Protecting their loved ones in dire situations, providing support, or just beating up their kids over mistakes long past, these fathers can be the heroes and villains in our protagonist’s story.
And so, after the end of another year full of great games both big and small, here we are to put together a collection of some of our favourite music that got piped into our earholes while playing them.
I’ve been something of a negligent father this year in games: raucous little shits bouncing around me, screaming “Da” while The Last of Us stares with broken eyes from her half-destroyed blanket fort. It’s a seedy blanket hovel at best. I’ve been consumed by others things, though; I’ve hardly noticed the guttersnipes.
Ah, 2013. I wouldn’t say it was a busy year for games, personally, yet a look-back over a list of ones beaten perhaps says otherwise. Plus, I was sure to play some of the big releases, and certainly ones that will find their place among other people’s GOTY picks. So, where to begin…
As far as gaming in 2013 went, this year went pretty well for me. I played a surprisingly good amount of new games, and managed to cover a good bit of my backlog too. It’s December, so like many other places and people, it’s time to reflect on the games I enjoyed the most in 2013.
My 2013 in gaming has been severely lacking on previous years, having experienced both sides of the money:time equation. The first half of the year having all the time but none of the money to get games, and in the latter half I had the money but the lack of time to play them. So, for the most part, my year has been spent playing through my backlog, meaning a lot of non-2013 games, or playing on my phone where games are cheap, and easy to fit into the day.
Normally, the “Game of the Year” feature on Press X or Die would pan out with us each pitching our top games in the run up to the year’s end and then we’d agree on our overall winner. Nice and simple, and the usual way these things tend to go.
Today, Valve announced the first stage of their living room takeover: SteamOS. A Linux distro built with PC gaming in mind to be launched in 2014. Their announcement promises much, but some key details are missing and I begin to wonder who SteamOS is for and in what scenarios Valve envisage it.
So the past few weeks I’ve been quite intensively participating in a couple of role-playing campaigns, and there has been some interest in it so I figured I would share some tips on getting into role-playing.

It’s probably apt that I reached my GOTY decision in a partly mechanical manner. In lieu of my final choice doing anything particularly outstanding, my 130+ hours in its multiplayer mode stands as a testament to its lasting entertainment value and elevated it above other close contenders. Yep, I never expected to be basing my decision on the combat – the mechanics – in a Mass Effect game, but here we are.
