How to Get Into Tabletop Role-playing
So the past few weeks I’ve been quite intensively participating in a couple of role-playing campaigns, and there has been some interest in it so I figured I would share some tips on getting into role-playing.
Friday Freeloader: DUST 514
DUST 514 has hit open beta, allowing anyone with a PS3 to join in with one of the most interesting games of the year.
Great Game Music of 2012
Just like 2011, 2012 was a year chock full of great games with equally great soundtracks. We were wowed by gaming’s diverse soundscape, from the smaller titles to big releases, and here we share some of our personal favourites.
Futureproof: A Matter of Convenience
It has long been the hope of gamers for the walls dividing consoles and PCs to be torn down. From exclusives to features to controls, there have always been factors keeping the two apart. But each generation, we get closer and closer. And the truth is… that hasn’t been a good thing.
Game of the Year 2012
We’ve played the games, we’ve made our cases for our nominees, and we’ve now sat and deliberated and voted on our top game of 2012. And we can now reveal that our winner for Game of the Year 2012 is…
Appetizers: Hundreds
My favorite games on the iOS App Store continue the trend that Nintendo’s Wii started in 2006; they utilize simplistic, natural controls to create engaging experiences that almost everyone can play, but few can master. Only a handful of developers have handled this as well as Semi Secret, who defined an entire genre with the “endless runner” known as Canabalt. These mad geniuses of design have returned with Hundreds, which might be their easiest/hardest game to date.
Game of the Year Public Vote 2012
You’ve seen our nominations, now you get to pick your choice for Game of the Year. Select from one of our nominated games, or add in your own. We’ll announce the winner of the public vote alongside the writers’ vote on New Year’s Eve.
My Game of the Year: Mass Effect 3
It’s probably apt that I reached my GOTY decision in a partly mechanical manner. In lieu of my final choice doing anything particularly outstanding, my 130+ hours in its multiplayer mode stands as a testament to its lasting entertainment value and elevated it above other close contenders. Yep, I never expected to be basing my decision on the combat – the mechanics – in a Mass Effect game, but here we are.
My Game of the Year: FTL – Faster Than Light
FTL – Faster Than Light is my game of the year. It is no huge grand release, but unlike others chosen for specific qualities that would make them the best game of the year, FTL is a game of the Year.
My Game of the Year: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
If there’s such a thing as a “Gaming Journalism Ten Commandments”, I’m relatively certain this post is breaking at least one of them. Somewhere in there there’s got to be a “Thou shalt not make a game you haven’t finished your Game of the Year”, likely following commandment number seven, “Thou shalt not give Duke Nukem Forever a good recommendation”. While I assure you I won’t be writing the latter, hear me out on the former. XCOM: Enemy Unknown, although it is my game of the year, is one that [...]
My Game of the Year: Tokyo Jungle
I wanted to be writing about Persona 4 Golden, but my conscience wouldn’t allow it. Giving 2012 Game of the Year to a 2008 game that was simply rereleased is obviously cheating, and I couldn’t do it. And while it’s certainly the game I’ve enjoyed most this year, it’s for the best that I can’t give it GotY.
My Game of the Year: Dishonored
Dishonored is a first-person stealth action game developed by Arkane Studios for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. If you don’t know that already, you’ve been living under a gaming rock. It’s also my Game of the Year, and I think anyone who disagrees is an awful yazzihamper of an un-person.
My Game Of The Year: Pokémon Conquest
James opens the Press X Or Die 2012 Game Of The Year proceedings with a game that might raise a few eyebrows; Pokémon Conquest for the Nintendo DS.
Free to Play: Team Fortress 2
Out five years this year, Team Fortress 2 has been played and enjoyed by millions. After a year as a free-to-play game, has Team Fortress 2 retained its unique blend of class-based fun or has the weight of all the items on the Mann Store and all those free-to-play gamers crushed the quality of this much-loved title?
Curiosity – What’s Inside the Cube
In early March of this year, Peter Molyneux, a games industry veteran, parted ways with Lionhead and Microsoft after working with them for fifteen and six years, respectively. He embarked on the founding of a new games studio, 22Cans, with several other Lionhead veterans, and they have now released their first… experiment: Curiosity – What’s Inside the Cube?
