GOTY: What is everyone leaning towards?

We are getting near the end of the year and we’ve had quite the year of release not quite 2007 but there are some blockbusters released this year.

PS3: Killzone 2, Flower, Infamous, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in time, Uncharted 2

360: Shadow Complex, Forza 3, Halo:ODST, Splosion Man

Wii: New Super Mario Bros Wii, Wii Sports Resort, Mad World, Punch-Out

PC: Dragon Age Origins, Plants vs Zombies, Torchlight, Sims 3

PSP: Dissidia: Final Fantasy, SoulCaliber, Gran Turismo PSP, LittleBigPlanet PSP

DS: Scribblenauts, Rhythm Heaven, Pokemon Platinum, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

Multi-Platform: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Left4Dead 2, Brutal Legend, Street Fighter IV, Borderlands

We can discuss the lists and weed out choices we feel should be added or subtracted from each list I just wanted to see where everyones head was at for their game of the year suggestions.

  1. TL;DR: Very long post filled with opinions, take everything i say with a grain of salt.

    To be perfectly honest:

I feel that Dragon Age: Origins deserves a GOTY, though it was also mutli-platform.

    Here’s my top picks

PC – Dragon Age: Origins (OR BORDERLANDS)
Wii: New Super Mario Bros (pretty much a given)
360: Shadow Complex (out of those you listed)
PS3: without a doubt Uncharted 2. also Demon Souls.
Multi-Platform: Call of Duty: MW2. It doesn’t matter what your or my opinions are on this game, it more than likely will receive a GOTY edition and award.

    Now for individual problems:
    PC

L4D2: several bugs, not much storyline. i haven’t played it yet but i read about it all the time.

Plants Vs. Zombies: a couple lesser bugs, very well made. no problems here.

Torchlight: Just not epic enough to receive a perfect anything. it’s a nice little game, don’t get me wrong, but it’s still not amazing enough to deserve GOTY.

Sims 3: So many problems with this one, i don’t even know where to begin. It’s a nice little step up from The Sims 2, but that’s about it.

Dragon Age: Origins: Awkward sex scenes (Morrigan + bra? seriously, What the fuck…), Slight problem with the dagger damage, immediate DLC that really didn’t add much to the game (the armor is hideous, The weapons are weak and easily replaced) apart from Sten, who is a total buzz kill whenever he speaks. Enchantment?

    HONORABLE MENTIONS:
    Borderlands.
No game that I’ve played this year seems more deserving of a GOTY award. plus the DLC, Amazing developers, Wonderful graphics (i hate cell shading but it worked in this game), a bit cartoony. A few bugs (okay, a lot but they’re getting fixed) and online play is a rush to the next weapons spawn point. This would be the only reason i do not recommend online play to my friends. Singleplayer, however, is a gem. a beautiful diamond that might as well be cast in 24kt gold.

    Wii:
New Super Mario Bros Wii: Not many problems that i’ve heard of, though online play and same-screen multiplayer is apparently ridden with problems. I could be wrong.

Wii Sports Resort: I don’t even think this should be listed, it adds a few minor minigames that are not very fun at all. that’s my opinion at least.

Mad World: Never played it, however this is the only game for the Wii i would love to play more than any other. Haven’t heard anything about it either, so i cannot fully comment on it.

Punch-Out: As far as I know, this is a Virtual Console port with a minor update. This should not be listed as it is only a re-release and not a completely new game. Though it does add some new modes.

    Multi-Platform:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: I wont rant here. It’s all been said before. there are several problems that MUST be addressed but Infinity Ward is avoiding them, Instead fixing a Javelin bug that allowed you to explode upon death and take out everything within a 20 meter (?) radius.

Batman: Arkham Asylum: Probably one of the best games I’ve played this year, and I’ve played quite a few. One minor problem I noticed was occasionally you can grapple through walls and continue falling forever. This is most prominent in the Library section, often outside as well.
Grapple points also may not show up from time to time.

Left4Dead 2: Again, i have not played this but from what i’ve heard (steam forums) it’s a bug ridden copy of L4D1 with an upgraded engine. Nothing a modder couldn’t have done. Though this is neither the time nor place.

Brutal Legend: I, once again, have not played it. Though from the reviews and “Let’s Play” threads i have read, i noticed most people get ungodly bored with it while playing. As the gameplay switches from a FPRPG type game to a Third Person RTS (You can swap between FP and TP during the RTS Missions).
From what i ahve read, they had more fun doing side missions and talking to Ozzy than actually doing the storyline.

Street Fighter IV: Have not played, though i have played Street Fights Alpha Max 3 (or something along those lines) And i assume it is the same with upgraded graphics, more moves, more characters and a couple extra stages. Have not heard of any bugs, so any opinion i have on this is pretty moot.

    360:
Shadow Complex: Have not played, have not heard of. No opinion.

Forza 3: Another racing game, have not played, No Opinion.

Halo:ODST: According to numerous sources, it’s Halo 3 without a wait-and-heal system and a short storyline. Haven’t heard of any bugs and i have not played it. The multiplayer extra maps, however, sounds like a good deal unless you have already bought them for Halo 3.

Splosion Man: While i had my 360 (i had to pawn it.) this was one of the only games i wanted to buy. Sounds and looks like a beautiful game. Have not played and i cannot possibly comment on bugs.

    PS3:
Killzone 2: I was not even aware this existed. Sorry, no opinion.

Flower: Not even sure what this one is, Again: No Opinion.

Infamous: Heard a little about this game, sounded fun. Haven’t played and cant give a good opinion or review like thing.

Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in time: Any Ratchet and Clank game is a good game. And being that it is a game i’m sure it has some bugs or glitches but I have not played it.

Uncharted 2: Again, I have not played this game but from what i have heard on random internet gaming blogs, websites and magazines this is a very wonderful game worth buying or at the very least renting. Have not heard of any bugs, and i have no opinion.
(Also, the “Next-Gen” Filter is hilarious.)

That got longer than i had hoped, Oh well.

    1. Just played through about 20 minutes of Dirt 2.
I believe it also is incredibly deserving of a GOTY Edition.
in the 20 minutes i played through on Easy i managed to come in first on 6 races.

Racing games are not my strong point, in fact i entirely dislike them.
All but GRID and now, Dirt 2.

Dirt 2 manages to balance Beauty, Cars, and wonderful racing that doesn’t feel too arcade-y.
It somehow takes everything that made GRID a great game and doubles it.
Even the menus are amazing. Loading screens are a little boring but they’re still pretty and more entertaining than “LOADING… [||||| ]”

After i play more and get a feel for it, i may write a review.

  2. I’d have to say my favorite game I played this year was Street Fighter IV, and that it is completely deserving of GOTY.

I really wanted Scribblenauts to be great, but the controls and physics are so broken that I can’t even consider it as one of the top games I played this year.

I had a chance to play L4D2 for about an hour, and I can’t really say I like it more than the first game. I can’t really pin down my reason why, but I would have probably came to a conclusion had I played the entire game.

I can’t even really consider Modern Warfare 2 as game of the year in any way because it’s a sequel. Yes, things have changed. But everything that is different about the game feels so important from a hardcore COD player’s standpoint and not someone that just picked up the game after playing COD4 for a few weeks. And the singleplayer was terrible.

Honestly, 2009 was not that great of a year, especially following 2008 and 2007. That, and I really only played 10-15 games this year, and I missed a lot of the big ones(Borderlands, Dragon Age, Batman, Shadow Complex).

  3. Although I personally find these GOTY awards meaningless, it seems the rest of the gaming world has taken a liking to them, and thus I force myself to post.
I will simply say that Dragon Age is the best game this year and arguably the best western RPG this decade.

  4. Take this with a grain of salt as I’m a complete FF fanboy, but I’ve sunk the most enjoyable hours this year playing Dissidia. Perhaps it’s because I had alot of flying this year but I thought it was a great game, with fun gameplay, even if the story was a bit weak.

As for consoles…hard to say… I liked Uncharted 2 but not all that much. I’m wanting to say Batman here. The voice acting was great, the graphics and atmosphere were really and good and it just played well. It’s probably the best Superhero game I’ve played…ever…and was enjoyable from start to finish.

    1. My overall game of the year comes between 3 game: Batman: Arkham Asylum, Uncharted 2: Among Theives, New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Batman was just a huge surprise to me as it was just so good it fully embodied what I want from a Batman game and superhero games as a whole. Uncharted just blew me away with its Storytelling its character development and pacing. People say all the time that games are “like roller coaster” rides but I actually felt that after about the second chapter the game was constantly in a runaway break neck pace. Then we come to Mario the game that like Mario Galaxy convinced me that Nintendo hasn’t lost all its magic and that they can still craft challenging and just plan fun games to play.

Man, I love all three don’t make me choose.

……I think I’m gonna go with Uncharted2. I’ve never seen a game much such a leap from one entry to the next you could see the ground work in the first game of what the game could be but this one just elevated each and every aspect.

      1. I liked Unc2 very much but the final boss literally ruined the game for me, not fun AT ALL. Same as the first’s final boss battle imo. Hopefully they fix that in the inevitable third.
